Top tracks of 2013

Musical highlights from the past year

In no particular order, a list of some of the musical highlights for me of 2013 – these are the tracks that I’ve either found myself listening to on regular repeat or had stuck in my head over the last year, hence their inclusion. There are plenty of other tracks I could’ve included here, but the vast majority of those have already been featured on my recent mixtapes (see previous blog entry). Some of these are from releases I’ve reviewed this year.

dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip – ‘Stunner’
Everything about this is infectious, from the beats to the lyrics, and the one-take video is just great. Taken from the album ‘Repent Replenish Repeat’.
Genre: hip-hop

Talanas – ‘Beloved Whore’
The b-side to ‘Corpseflower’, the limited vinyl 7″ single released by Talanas. Whilst no streaming audio is currently available, do be on the lookout on the Facebook page regarding further news on forthcoming releases, including their acoustic EP.
Genre: progressive/goth metal

Korn – ‘Never Never’
Back with a vengeance, reunited with founding guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch. Taken from the album ‘The Paradigm Shift’.
Genre: nu-metal

An Escape Plan – ‘Living Together’
I was completely sucked in by this – their Bee Gees cover, first launched into the public eye via this Ikea advert. Edited down for the advert, this is the closest thing to a full-length version I could find for this list, so I’ve included a live version, uploaded by band member Craig ‘Arge’ Brown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K85OIsLKcbo. Taken from the ‘Living Together EP’.
Genre: folk

The October Game – ‘Beg Cycle’
It’s an album full of highlights, but ‘Beg Cycle’, one of the first tracks made available, stood out in particular. Taken from the album ‘Balancing’.
Genre: alt-rock

Lorde – ‘Royals’
Catchy as hell (in fact, that exact line has been used by others too), taken from her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’- though it did debut on her 2012 EP ‘The Love Club EP’, it was this year that it was officially released as a single with this video accompanying it.
Genre: hip-hop

Hello Lazarus – ‘When In Rome’
The lead track from this year’s ‘Moving Forward Over The Next Financial Quarter’ EP – another trio with the potential for big things.
Genre: alt-rock

Owen Stephen – ‘Just Dreaming’
Owen was able to take his various influences, and blend them to form his debut solo EP, the infectious ‘Just Dreaming’.
Genre: acoustic pop

The Civil Wars – ‘The One That Got Away’
Anything with a Fleetwood Mac-esque (circa ‘Rumours’) vibe to it gets my approval, and this is no exception. Sadly, this duo split after recording of their self-titled album was completed.
Genre: folk/alt-country

Author & Punisher – ‘Fearce’
Dark and noisy, taken from the inventive one-man industrial doom/drone act’s ‘Women & Children’ EP.
Genre: noise/drone

Otep – ‘Apex Predator’
Probably NSFW – taken from Otep’s fierce and sadly last album, ‘Hydra’. They’ve bowed out in style.
Genre: rap-metal

Sons Of Guns – ‘Bad Blood’
It’s one of those tunes that stays in your head. Taken from the free ‘Bad Blood’ EP.
Genre: electronic

Adam Ant – ‘Cool Zombie’
Not just a catchy tune, it was also good to see Adam Ant back again. Co-written with former 3 Colours Red/Grand Theft Audio guitarist Chris McCormack, taken from the album ‘Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter’.
Genre: pop-rock

God Damn – ‘Heavy Money’
I could’ve easily have posted the free ‘Heavy Money’ EP here again (reviewed a few months ago), with it being such a strong release, but this is the first track I heard from it. These guys could go far.
Genre: metal/alt-rock

Placebo – ‘Too Many Friends’
They’re not a band I’ve listened to often, but there was something about this that kept me coming back. Taken from the album ‘Loud Like Love’.
Genre: alt-rock
